general david petraeus granted paula broadwell exclusive and extraordinary access to pen his biography, he likely never imagined it would lead to his downfall. but tonight, his reputation is solid, the fbi is under scrutiny and agents have descended on broadwell's home to gather more material. material broadwell is now willingly providing them in this increasingly strange scandal. the affair first came to light this summer as part of an fbi investigation prompted by a complaint from this woman, jill kelly, a private citizen and military supporter who had befriended petraeus and his wife holly. kelly received harassing e-mails from an anonymous account and took them to a friend at the fbi in may or june. the bureau obtained a court order and electronically traced the accounts to petraeus' biographer. broadwell eventually turned her computer over to the fbi. they were stunned to discover hundreds if not thousands of e-mails some salacious between petraeus and broadwell. >> and the fbi, that's why they call it a preliminary investigation, and realized they had general petraeus c

. official it was a complaint that paula broadwell, the woman who wrote the biography of general peatry was was sending harassing e-mails to another woman that prompted the fbi to investigate. also we know from that source that the investigation led to the discovery of e-mails between broadwell and petraeus that indicated the affair. that second woman hasn't been identified and the official we spoke with didn't know the nature of that woman's relationship with the former director. but more details are coming out about the time line of events and when u.s. officials were notified of the circumstances of this investigation. senior u.s. intelligence official tells cnn the fbi informed the director of national intelligence, james clapper, about the investigation on tuesday night, election night, just as some polls were beginning to close, and that director clapper as a friend, colleague, fellow officer and admirer, urged petraeus to step down from his position. we know as well from that intelligence source that director clapper informed the white house about the investigation on wednesday,

inadvertently exposed the affair between general petraeus and paula broadwell. meantime a team of fbi agents searched broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, overnight, and spent nearly five hours there wrapping up just after 1:00 in the morning. "wall street journal" is reporting that the fbi agent who launched the petraeus investigation himself is under investigation. in part because he sent shirtless pictures of himself to jill kelley. jill kelley, the woman who kicked off all of this investigation, by complaining about the e-mails that she was getting from the petraeus mistress. so the agent, who knew kelley, allegedly sent those pictures before any investigation began, but as you can see, the story is getting much more complicated. we've got team coverage of the breaking news this morning. chris lawrence is at the pentagon. chris, i don't even know where to begin because there's so much to talk about. let's start with general allen. what's the implications of this -- of him being brought in to petraeus scandal and what has he said about it? >> so far, from what we've heard from d
